Students across Canada take the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge

At Strut, we like to make learning fun! And that’s what we did with the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge, an in-school program and contest developed to provide engaging learning tools to teachers and increase the energy literacy of students across Canada.

Developed as a partnership between Shell Canada and Canadian Geographic, the web- and classroom-based contest helped students increase their understanding of energy issues, and especially how to improve their own energy efficiency.

Each year more than 11,000 students in more than 500 classrooms from every province and territory in Canada have completed lessons and challenges linked to the K-12 curriculum, with an emphasis on Social Studies and Science.

Built our own flexible Insynergi™ platform, we developed a website with a full content management system that allowed participating teachers to log their students’ completed challenges and manage their classroom’s public profile. Teachers were also able to download additional learning materials developed with Canadian Geographic educators, including lesson plans and posters, and monitor their classroom’s progress against others across the country.

The program includes a Video Challenge, with the opportunity for classrooms to win Flip Cameras and a grand prize of $2,000 for technology to support school learning. Students were asked to write a “public service announcement” to help Canadians understand the value of saving energy and share energy-saving tips.

The contest was seen by millions each day through paid print and digital advertising and earned media, and has directly engaged tens of thousands of young Canadians from coast to coast.
